On 14th October 2022, TAKUZA conducted a training for Community Animators, bringing together Church and Traditional Leaders, youth representatives and Government workers. The aim of the training was to empower participants with practical knowledge on human trafficking and migrant smuggling, enabling them to identify and report cases and raise awareness within their communities.
Following the training, the 36 participants acknowledged that trafficking is more widespread in their area and many realised and emphasised the urgent need for this information to be disseminated, especially in villages, so that communities can be awakened to the issue of trafficking.
Additionally, they highlighted real examples from their district: young boys are being exploited in mines within Katete and women being married off to foreigners from neighbouring countries, who in some cases take them to their countries, where they are subjected to exploitation and cheap labour.
They further stated that many cases go unreported simply because people do not recognize them as trafficking, contributing to the rise of such cases within the town. The training therefore reinforced the importance of community awareness, reporting and vigilance.
