Law Enforcement Officers Trained on Investigations – Lusaka District

TAKUZA, in partnership with the Anti-Human Trafficking Department (AHTD), conducted two intensive trainings on Investigations of Human Trafficking and Smuggling of Migrants from 18–20 February 2025 and 22–24 July 2025 at Kapingila Guest House, Catholic Secretariat.

The sessions brought together officers from the Zambia Police Service, Drug Enforcement Commission, Department of Immigration, ULEMU, Child Rescue Foundation, CARITAS Zambia, Religious Men from the Catholic Church and other key ministries. The July workshop additionally focused on strengthening the capacity of legal departments to improve case handling when matters reach the courts.

Across both trainings, participants engaged in practical exercises, case studies and scenario-based learning to refine their ability to identify, investigate and respond to trafficking and smuggling cases while ensuring victim protection. The workshops also created space for agencies to improve coordination and share real-world challenges encountered in the field.

Key Action Points Identified

Participants highlighted several priority areas to further strengthen Zambia’s national response:

  • Continuous sensitizations by frontline officers

  • Increased joint operations among law enforcement agencies

  • Closer scrutiny of internal travel, where many trafficking cases occur

  • Training for bus drivers and conductors as first-line detectors

  • Advocacy for more resources to support anti-trafficking work

  • Reinforcing integrity and ethical standards during document verification

The trainings were described as timely and eye-opening, offering officers renewed commitment and practical skills to enhance Zambia’s fight against human trafficking and the smuggling of migrants.
